splish splash

i took this picture when i was down in charleston, SC for a friends wedding. i was amazed by the beautiful architecture and the history in this town. this house caught my attention b/c of its neutral tones and big red door which added the splash of color it needed. it's something to keep in mind when decorating a room. sometimes all you need is a simple decor with a splash of boldness. a little color can make a huge statement.

serenity now

this is my clients living room in pound ridge, ny. their country house is a great escape for them after a long work week in NYC but this room in particular is one of their favorites. the soft blues, whites and natural tones in the room give you a sense of serenity. it's like bringing home a taste of the beach and dropping it directly in your LR. grab a book, a magazine or simply stir a cocktail and grab some friends to sit down, hang out and enjoy life.

inspiration, moves me

i like to keep my inspiration board above my desk so that i'm constantly reminded of good design ideas. if you're watching this season's "the bachelor" you're probably thinking this is like my "vision board". it's not. i'm not crazy. i promise.
oh, and i should probably mention that the postcard in the middle of my board that says "grove new york" is a mailer my friend sarah sent out when she opened her home decor shop in the west village. if you haven't been, you need to check it out. the shop is located at 617 hudson street (btwn. jane and w. 12th) but she's also online at www.grovenyc.com. happy shopping.

recession proof

it's time to clean out your garage, organize your closets and give your house a facelift without spending a lot of money. just because we're in a recession, doesn't mean you can't re-decorate and give your home some life! here are the best ways to make use of what you already own:

1. take that frumpy old dresser or boring bookshelves that have been hiding in your basement or garage and give them a fresh coat of paint - depending on the look you're going for you can either spray it with a fun high gloss paint or give an antiqued look by painting it with flat paint and sanding it at the edges.

2. take off those old pillow cases and find a fun new fabric to cover your throw pillows on the couch in the family room. something bright and bold will make a big statement and change the room in an instant. while you're at it, you can use the same fabric (or a coordinating plain fabric) to trim the bottom of your plain looking sofa or chairs.

3. take that old table that has seen its day and throw a tablecloth or fabric on top. no one needs to know what it looks like underneath!

4. do you have a collection of art from your kids' old school projects, posters and old paintings that are forming their own collection in the attic? time to bring them down, clean them up and create a picture wall. using the same color/type of frame can make a picture perfect statement.
